It’s not even half way through January yet, you’ve lost track of time and the boredom is increasing. You’ve finished watching the Bridgerton series for the third time, so now what?
I have a few suggestions I absolutely love which will be sure to mend your Bridgerton broken heart.
Anne With An E.
Available to watch on Netflix is Anne with an E. I stumbled across this series just after I finished season 4 of The Crown and wanted something set in older times to watch. Set in the late 1890’s in Canada, Anne with an E is based on an orphan who just wants love. She ends up living with a family that run a farm and the story develops with many up’s and downs on her struggle to fit in.
Honestly I loved this 3 part series and if you’re into novels that have turned into shows then I would recommend. I haven’t read the books, so I’m not sure how accurate it is. I do want to eventually read them to see though.
I’m sure most people have watched this now as when the fourth season came out in November, it was mentioned everywhere. If you haven’t yet though then I highly recommend. This series is based on our Queen Elizabeth II and her reign after her father’s death.
The acting is incredible and to learn behind the scenes of what happens in the royal family is interesting. Obviously some of it has been dramatised for entertainment though.
The Great is currently being shown on Channel 4, or you can watch the full season on Amazon Starzplay. It’s a comedy drama based on Catherine the Great and Peter III of Russia in the 18th-Century.
I laughed through this series as it just brought dry humour to drama. It’s very similar to Bridgerton with the comedy too, just with added gore if you don’t mind that.
The White Queen Series
A three part series with The White Queen, The White Princess and The Spanish Queen currently on Amazon Starzplay. I am obsessed with this show as it reminds me so much of Game of Thrones. The first of the series is The White Queen which follows Elizabeth Woodville and Edward IV with his ‘blood brothers’ of York.
It is full of drama, battles, and romantic scenes which makes it the perfect watch. Edward IV must decide on whether he trusts his family and effects of jealousy. This show was made in 2013, but I have only just found it now. If you haven’t seen it yet then I 100% recommend.
The White Princess
After following her mother in The White Queen, we now move onto Elizabeth of York and Henry VII and the reign of The Tudors. This again shows the up’s and down’s of love, battles and death, with Elizabeth having to make the choice between family and love.
The Spanish Princess
This series is currently the last and provides two seasons following Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII. Being promised to his brother Prince Arthur Tudor, and dealing with his sudden death, Catherine of Aragon must decide her fate after.
It’s so interesting seeing a young Henry VIII and how he was before he became King. I loved all these series and really hope there is another soon.
The Queen’s Gambit
When I first saw the trailer I just thought it was about chess and would be boring, but I was so wrong! It’s an incredible show about an orphan in the 1960’s who learns how to play chess and enter competitions. She isn’t seen as a rival to the other competitors because she is a girl.
It follows Beth as she grows and becomes an independent woman, dealing with the up’s and down of life to the glamour of travelling the world. I highly recommend this as the acting is beautiful.
Virgin River is based in Northern California. It is about Mel, a nurse practitioner who just wants to start a new life. Mel struggles to be welcomed into the community of such a remote town and the everyday events that occur.
I really enjoyed this series. I would say it’s more of a romantic drama but an easy watch too.
These are what I have watched recently and loved. There’s so many to mention but I thought I would start on these and maybe do a monthly roundup? Especially with lockdown still going on.
